Field Notes

The brief

Four years of survey data, published annually as a PDF nobody outside the group had ever opened. The ask was a printed journal and an identity that could hold both a spreadsheet and a photograph of a mudflat.

Role: Identity, art direction, editorial design

Process

  1. Read two years of surveys before drawing anything, which changed the format from A4 to a wide, short page that suits a transect
  2. Built a type system with one serif for argument and one condensed sans for data, so a table never interrupts the reading
  3. Set the palette from soil and water samples the group had already photographed, rather than choosing colours and justifying them later

Outcome

A 96-page journal, an identity that survives being printed badly, and a template the group updates themselves each quarter.

What I would change

The instinct was to make the data beautiful. What actually helped was making it sit still, so the photographs could do the persuading.
