Ember

Wood-fired restaurant · menu and reservations

A 40-cover restaurant cooking over fire. Switching from lunch to dinner changes the menu, the hours and the reservation slots together, because that is how a restaurant actually works.

The brief

What it had to do.

Restaurant sites bury the menu in a PDF and the booking in a popup. The brief was a page that treats the menu as the product and keeps lunch and dinner honest.

Design approach

The decisions behind it.

  • Deep green-black ground with cream type, saffron for emphasis and ember only for the mark
  • Italic serif headlines over a plain sans for menu data
  • Two-column menus with prices aligned, dietary marks and a legend

Signature interaction

Menu that switches with the service

A lunch or dinner toggle at the top of the menu rewrites the dishes, the prices, the hours and the available reservation times. The reservation widget builds a booking and holds it for fifteen minutes.

On a phone

Usable before anything loads.

The menu drops to one column and the floor plan scales with the viewport.
